The interior of Mexico may be a long distance away, but can be explored from home through hosting a visit by a Mexican academic or professional during their four-week stay in Laredo July 6-Aug. 3.

Texas A&M International University is currently searching for host families for Mexican professors and professionals from the University of Guanajuato (UG), Mexico, who will be enrolled in intensive English courses at the University.

Jannet García, director of the office for international programs at TAMIU, explained the visitors will be here as part of a collaborative program between UG and TAMIU that exchanges academics and professionals.

"These visitors have asked to be housed with families in Laredo so they can practice their English in the home environment," García said, "We encourage and ask of anyone who is interested in learning about Mexican culture, history, economy or educational systems to contact us and volunteer for this unique opportunity."

A home stay fee of $400 will be paid to the host family for room and board, García said.

García said a group of TAMIU faculty and administrators will also visit Guanajuato this summer to learn Spanish at the University of Guanajuato Language School.

"We are excited about the exchange of minds and culture that is made possible through the agreement between the two institutions," García said, "It is these types of meetings that make us truly international and appreciative of the world we live in."

For further information on how to become a host family, please contact García at 326-2566, e-mail jannetg@tamiu.edu or visit offices located in the Student Center, room 114N.

University office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
