Spring Commencement Exercises at Texas A&M International University will be held Saturday, May 11 at 9 a.m. at the Kinesiology/Convocation Center. An outdoor ceremony had been planned, but continued high heat and UV warnings prompted the move indoors.

Over 250 candidates for graduation are expected to participate in the combined ceremonies for undergraduate and graduate students.

Dr. Billy F. Cowart, founding president of the former Texas A&I University and Laredo State University, precursors to TAMIU, will provide the Commencement address.

Additional program highlights will include comments by Distinguished Student Scholar Clarissa Ruiz; presentation of the University's Scholar of the Year Award; the naming of Dr. Rafael Lecuona, professor of political science, as Professor Emeritus and the presentation of an honorary doctorate to retired former Laredo Independent School District superintendent Vidal M. Treviño. The honors have been approved by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.

At the conclusion of the Spring Commencement Exercises, a special ceremony and reception will be held to name one of the classroom buildings Dr. Billy F. Cowart Hall in Cowart's honor.
