A new scholarship made possible by Amigo Broadcasting will help Texas A&M International University students go further beginning this Fall Semester 2002.

The Amigo Broadcasting Annual Scholarship will provide a scholarship valued at $5,000 for one year of study.

The scholarship is made possible through an innovative gift-in-kind that will see Amigo Broadcasting, parent company of local radio stations KNXT and KQUR, provide and broadcast an equivalent amount of donated on-air advertising in support of the University.

Michelle A. Alexander, vice president for institutional advancement, said the Amigo Broadcasting Annual Scholarship represents a new collaborative opportunity that benefits both the student and the University.

"This gift affords the University student a new scholarship opportunity while also helping our State-assisted University with critical corporate support that secures promotional assistance. We encourage other media members to consider joining in similar collaborations with the University," she said.

Miguel Villarreal, Amigo Broadcasting, chief operating officer, said the initiative underscores his company's support of higher education.

"Our company has been blessed with much success in the Laredo market and consider this a way of giving back to the community, supporting our University and helping a student to secure their dream of a higher education. We challenge others to consider assisting the University as well," Villarreal said.

Students selected for the Amigo Broadcasting Annual Scholarship must meet TAMIU admission and scholarship criteria. Preference will be given to employees or children of employees of Amigo Broadcasting or students, employees or children of employees majoring in Communications. If students meeting these specific criteria are not available, the Scholarship may be awarded to a student majoring in English or the Fine and Performing Arts.
