Dr. Ray Keck, Texas A&M International University president, has been selected as part of the 2002 class for the "Harvard Seminar for New Presidents" hosted by the Harvard Graduate School of Education meeting this summer in Cambridge.

Keck is one of only 40 Class members selected nationwide for the week-long Seminar taking place on the Harvard campus this month.

The Harvard Seminar for New Presidents provides new presidents with a practical and conceptual orientation to the presidency and familiarizes them with the opportunities and challenges they will likely face. Through various sessions, it works to prepare them for the multiple responsibilities and constituencies of their new role.

"Just like our students, I find that much valuable learning can take place outside of the classroom. I'm looking forward to focused discussions with presidents from similar and different institutions. It's a remarkable opportunity and I believe I'll benefit greatly from the practical experience and insight," Dr. Keck said, "I'm also looking forward to returning to Massachusetts, where I spent some of my youth in college."

Keck will attend sessions ranging from fundraising to building the administrative team, and academic leadership to articulating a vision. All focus on the critical issues of the first months and years of the presidency. Key to the sessions is providing new presidents opportunities to reflect upon their situation and consult with experts about specific concerns and questions. Additionally, the program's presidents will become part of an extraordinary peer group of colleagues from around the country.

The Seminar faculty is drawn from Harvard University, with guest faculty and experienced presidents from across the nation.

Keck became TAMIU's fifth president Sept. 1, 2001.

He holds his Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from Princeton University. His A.B. was also earned at Princeton. He was a Rockefeller Brothers Fellow at the Harvard Divinity School. In addition, he participated in summer programs at Bryn Mawr College in Madrid and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
