University's Lunce Named to DSI Doctoral Student Consortium

A member of the Texas A&M International University College of Business Administration faculty, Dr. Steve Lunce, has been named a faculty member of the prestigious Decision Sciences Institute's (DSI) Doctoral Student Consortium.

The appointment is significant as Dr. Lunce is the only faculty member from a non-Ph.D. degree-granting institute named this year to the DSI Consortium, which meets in San Diego this November.

Lunce said he thinks the appointment bodes well for the University and signals its coming entry into the ranks of Ph.D.-granting universities.

"I think it speaks volumes for the visibility our University is generating, the importance of the research we are conducting, and our preparation of students," Lunce said. "We are currently developing our first Ph.D. in International Business, but we're already being invited to the table, so to speak, shared by institutions that have had these degrees for decades," he added.

The DSI is a multidisciplinary international association dedicated to advancing knowledge and improving instruction in all business and related disciplines. It facilitates development and dissemination of knowledge in diverse decision sciences through publication, conferences, and other services. First established in 1968, it includes over 3,500 members. It publishes Decision Sciences, a recognized publication among practitioners and academicians.

The 2002 Doctoral Student Consortium, now in its 20th year, provides doctoral students well into their program an opportunity to meet and focus on career goals, job search issues, placement services, research strategies, teaching effectiveness, manuscript reviewing, and promotion and tenure with a variety of academic and professions representatives.

At the Consortium, Lunce will mentor doctoral students on job searches, serve on a panel and present "The Employment Opportunities at Regional Institutions."

Lunce joined TAMIU in 1992 and is professor of information systems and director of graduate programs in the College of Business. He earned his Ph.D. in business administration with a major in Information Systems, and minors in Computer Science and Research Methods from the University of Texas at Arlington. In addition, he holds both an M.B.A. with a concentration in M.I.S., and a B.A. in history from The University of Dallas. He is a Certified Computing Professional and a Certified Disaster Recovery Planner. His primary fields of research include those in managerial issues concerning disaster recovery and contingency planning, deployment of technology in developing economies, A.I. applications in managerial decision-making, expertise and expert identifications, innovations in M.I.S. Education, strategic utilization of information and historical perspectives of M.I.S.

Lunce was elected vice president of the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) last April and is completing a two-year term. He represents the southwest region which includes colleges and universities in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, and New Mexico.
