This summer, Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, associate professor of music and chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Texas A&M International University, traveled to the city of Crestone, Colo. to present a joint lecture concert along with harpsichordist Sylvia Hazlerig, longtime former Laredo Community College music faculty member.

The trip, which Soto took earlier this month, marked the third time the classical guitarist has visited Crestone to perform in a concert sponsored in part by the Crestone Mountain Music Association, with members from cities such as Salida, Alamosa, Grand Canyon, San Luis and Colorado Springs, among others.

Dr. Soto performed solos by Johann Sebastian Bach, Fernando Sor and Mateo Carcassi as well as traditional flamenco guitar music.

Hazlerig performed pieces by Claude-Louis Daquin, Benedetto Marcello, Jean Baptiste Lully, and Arcangelo Corelli.

Together, Soto and Hazlerig performed the famous "Concerto in D" by Antonio Vivaldi as well as two sets of preludes and fugues for guitar and harpsichord composed by Hazlerig. This same program is scheduled to be performed at TAMIU early in the 2003 spring semester.

Soto holds a bachelor's degree in education from the Universidad Autónoma del Noreste, a bachelor's of arts degree in music from Abilene Christian University, a master's degree in music and a Ph.D. in music education from the University of Southern Mississippi.

He has served as music instructor at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Hinds College, Tecnológico de Monterrey (Campus Laguna), and LCC.

He has won numerous awards and performed concerts throughout the United States and Mexico, including the White House and Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
