Friday will be a historic day at Texas A&M International University. That's when the University will inaugurate its Dustdevils Athletics Program when the men's soccer team hosts Wiley College in a 5 p.m. contest at the TAMIU Soccer Complex.

University president Dr. Ray Keck said Friday signals the latest chapter in the University's growth and development.

"We've all eagerly looked forward to the addition of athletics to University life here and are really anxious to see this latest chapter in our University's growth and development," Dr. Keck said.

The Student Government Association (SGA) has scheduled a pep rally for Thursday, August 29 to kick-off the fall sports season. The event will take place on the east patio of the Student Union from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.

The pep rally for students, faculty and staff will include the introduction of the men's and women's soccer and volleyball teams. A disc jockey will provide music while the University's pep band and cheerleaders will stir up school spirit. Free hamburgers, hot dogs and other food items will be provided with Coca-Cola of Laredo providing free drinks to the campus community. Dustdevil and Laredo Bucks T-shirts and other promotional items will also be available as prizes to lucky students.

SGA president Erika Torres says TAMIU students are very excited about the start of Dustdevil athletics.

"We can't wait to see our teams in action." Torres said, "We are looking forward to a great season, especially because it will help promote school spirit and increase student involvement."

To reach Dustdevil Athletics facilities, take Loop 20 to the campus and enter at 5201 University Boulevard. Proceed east to the first stop sign. Turn right at the stop sign and proceed to the last parking lot before road ends.

The TAMIU soccer complex is located immediately south of that parking lot. Admission will be $3 for adults and $1 for students. All persons with TAMIU identification will be admitted free of charge.

It will be a busy opening week on campus after the men's soccer home opener on August 30. Women's soccer opens the home portion of its schedule on Monday, Sept. 2 against College of the Southwest and volleyball plays its first-ever home match on Wednesday, Sept. 4 with an exhibition against Laredo Community College.
