Economic Crisis in Latin America Focus of CSWHT Lecture Tuesday, Nov. 5

What are the ramifications of the economic crisis in Latin America?

Will a change in political power in Brazil hinder or help South America's economic powerhouse?

What do changes in currency regimes and banking mean to developing Latin American countries?

These and other questions will be explored on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 at 7:30 p.m. as Texas A&M International University's Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade Keynote Speaker Series presents "Economic Crisis in Latin America," presented by Dr. William C. Gruben, vice-president and chief economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

The lecture will be held in the Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 116 and is free of charge and open to the public.

Dr. Gruben serves the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas as Vice President, Chief International Economist and Director of the Dallas Fed's Center for Latin American Economics.

The Center's purpose is two-fold: to promote public understanding of economic policy issues related to Latin America and to serve as a clearinghouse for information about the region.

Dr. Gruben's research focuses on international trade, international capital flows, currency regimes and banking - chiefly as these subjects apply to developing countries, in particular those of Latin America. He has published extensively on these topics in scholarly and technical journals.

He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Texas at Austin. He worked as a research associate at the university's Institute for Latin American Studies and its Center for Economic Development.

He has served on the faculty of economics at Southern Methodist University and on the faculty of International Management Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas.

TAMIU's Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade is a premier research and public service Institute founded to study globalization with special emphasis on the Western Hemisphere. The Center is a part of the University's College of the Business Administration. It seeks to increase awareness and knowledge about the Western Hemispheric countries and their economical, political and social interactions.
