Geographers Meeting at TAMIU to Cover Wide Range of Topics Nov. 6-9

Current topics ranging from the environment and evaluation of natural resources to cultural landscapes in North America will be featured at a meeting of American geographers hosted by Texas A&M International University Nov. 6-9.

The Southwest Division of the Association of American Geographers (SWAAG) Annual Meeting will be held at various locations at TAMIU, with receptions scheduled at TAMIU and La Posada Hotel. The event is being sponsored by TAMIU, Southwest Texas State University, University of Texas at Austin, Louisiana State University and University of Arkansas and will provide a rare view into geography with an international scope.

Registration fees are $50 for SWAAG members who are faculty and $35 for members who are students. All current members may renew their membership with a registration fee of $10 for faculty and $7 for students. A $60 fee is required for faculty who are non-SWAAG members and includes SWAAG membership. Students who are non-SWAAG members and Latin American citizens pay $42, which includes SWAAG membership. Registration fee for non SWAAG members who are neither faculty nor student, is $60.

Among invited guests to the event will be Mexican Consul in Laredo Daniel Hernández Joseph and U.S. Consul in Nuevo Laredo Tom Armbruster.

Meeting sessions are divided into the areas of geographical information sciences, qualitative research, student paper competition, cultural landscapes of North America, physical geography, geographic education, cultural geography, land use, the Middle Rio Grande, poster presentations, forest industries in Central and South America, The Canyon Dam flood of July 2002, economic behavior, space and place and the hazards of place, South Texas environment and identity, and mapping.
