Janet Eager Krueger, associate professor of art at Texas A&M International University, has a lot to say about South Texas and the ranching lifestyle. As a fine artist, she does so with paints and brush strokes, rather than words.

The newly opened SBC Center in San Antonio was looking for artists who could express the uniqueness of the area and whose art could be combined with the architecture and landscaping of the arena to create "the stamp of Texas." A total of 25 artists, including Krueger, were selected from across Texas, with pieces in mediums such as ceramic, canvas, neon and steel at a combined cost of $1 million. The artwork was selected to reflect the Center's slogan of "Something for Everyone."

Krueger was commissioned to create seven paintings of oil on canvas. Each painting is 4.5 feet by 4 feet and depicts "Texas ranching vernacular," reflecting her experiences growing up in Texas and being a rancher.

With simple titles such as "Pear Burner" and "Cow Dogs," Krueger's work expresses the harshness of ranch life, mingled with the joy of living. Her palette is bright and the shapes are rounded, instilling each painting with a feeling of motion.

The collection, inspired by Chairman and CEO of the Spurs ownership group, Peter Holt and his wife Julianna Hawn Holt, was unveiled on October 14. The Holts wanted to create an arena unlike any other in the country and provide an opportunity for people to learn about art even while attending a basketball game or a rock concert.
