Second Annual 'Sounds of Joy' Brings Soothing Melodies to TAMIU

Melodies will soothe hearts and minds during the second annual presentation of "Sounds of Joy," a musical presentation by the fine and performing arts students and faculty of Texas A&M International University Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

The event, a celebration of music and the growth of the fine and performing arts at TAMIU, is free and open to the public.

Dr. Gilberto Soto, fine and performing arts chair, said this year's event will showcase student music groups such as the TAMIU Chamber String Ensemble, under the direction of Karen Kline; the TAMIU Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Rachel Y. Cruz; the TAMIU Band, under the direction of Dr. Cruz; the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Gilberto D. Soto; and the TAMIU Opera Workshop, under the direction of Suzanne Ramo with the assistance of Dr. Fritz Gechter.

Dr. Soto said the entire community will be treated to a delightful program that includes the works of major classical composers.

"We invite the community to join us in this evening, also designed to showcase the best of TAMIU talent," Dr. Soto said.

New fine and performing arts offerings will be housed in the $22 million-plus Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. The approximately 88,000-square foot facility will include rehearsal and performance spaces, classrooms, exhibit areas and a music hall. Its completion is expected in 2003.
