TAMIU Prof Receives Fulbright to Honduras
Dr. Susan Berdahl, assistant professor of music at Texas A&M International University, has received a Fulbright Senior Specialists grant to participate in the first flute Congress at Escuela Nacional de Musica in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Dr. Berdahl will spend two weeks teaching master's classes, organizing the school's flute orchestra, and participating in public performances. Her visit to Honduras is in honor of International Education Week.
The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program offers two- to six-weeks grants to leading U.S. academic and professionals to support curricular and faculty development and institutional planning at academic institutions in 140 countries around the world.
Created to complement the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program which was started in 1946, the Senior Specialists Program aims to increasing the number of faculty and professionals who have the opportunity to go abroad on a Fulbright.
The Fulbright Scholar Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and managed by the Council of International Exchange of Scholars. The program's purpose is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
Berdahl joined the University this Fall. She holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, Minn. and an M.M. in flute performance from the University of Miami, Coral Gables. She earned her B.M. in music education at the University of Iowa.
She has been a principal flutist for the Orquesta Sinfónica de las Américas in Mexico, assistant professor of music at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and flutist and piccoloist for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Society in Little Rock, Ark.
She has also been a teaching associate at the University of Minnesota, professional flutist in various musical settings in Minneapolis, studio flute teacher in Minneapolis, and music supervisor and teacher in Maine and Iowa. In addition, she has served as exchange professor at the Moscow State Conservatory in Russia.
