Zacatecas Master Teacher to Give Folklórico Workshop Jan. 18-19 at TAMIU

Dancers wishing to learn more about the art of Mexican folkloric dancing are invited to participate in Texas A&M International University's 4th Annual Master Folkloric Workshop featuring master teacher Pedro Serna from Zacatecas, Mexico this weekend.

The sessions will be held Saturday, Jan. 18 from 2-6 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 19 from noon to 4 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the Kinesiology/Convocation Building, room 204 and are free of charge.

Gabriela Mendoza-García, TAMIU Ballet Folklórico instructor, explained that the sessions will teach dances from the Mexican states of Nuevo León,Chiapas and Baja California Sur.

The workshop is being sponsored by the TAMIU Ballet Folklórico, TAMIU's Fine and Performing Arts Department, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the City of Laredo.

Mendoza-García said folkloric dance students and their teachers who are 13 years of age and older may participate.

"It is recommended that participants have at least one year of training in folkloric dance," she said.

All participants must use folkloric dance shoes and boots for the workshop. Women are required to bring a practice skirt and have their hair pulled back away from the face. They are also recommended to bring water bottles and snacks.

Those wishing to register for the workshop must contact Mendoza-García and complete a registration form. Once complete, they must be faxed to Mendoza García at (956) 326-2279. Registration deadline has been extended until Friday Jan. 17.
