Laredoans of all ages will have an opportunity to join one of TV's most familiar faces, Subway spokesperson Jared Fogle, on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 8 a.m. - 12 noon at the American Heart Association's American Heart Walk at Texas A&M International University.

Fogle, most recently seen in a commercial airing during last weekend's SuperBowl, will lead the walk at TAMIU. This is the second year that the University hosts the national event that focuses on exercise as an important part of a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Jessica Palacios, development chair for the local AHA chapter, said response has been strong and organizers look forward to a successful event.

"We've had terrific response from throughout the city with teams forming from throughout the public and private sector. Banks, hospitals, and government agencies are all sending teams and we hope to have over 400 join us on Saturday," she explained.

She noted that people can also join the walk without being a part of a team.

"We encourage all walkers to join us. You can make a small donation on site and join in the fun. In addition to Jared, we'll also have blood pressure screenings afterwards, refreshments, and health information. It should be a great, fun event that the entire family could enjoy. The walk itself is a 5K, or 3 miles in length, and will wind throughout the beautiful TAMIU campus, starting on the Killam Library plaza and ending on the Killam Library lawn," she explained.

In addition to leading and completing the walk, Fogle will also take pictures with the teams. Prior to the walk, he will be making media appearances and is scheduled to visit local radio stations as well to encourage participation in the event.

National sponsors for the 2003 American Heart Walk are Subway and NutriSoy.

Gold sponsor is Central Power and Light. Silver sponsors include Doctor's Hospital, Mercy Health Systems, and Area Wide Phone Book.
