The official opening event of the 2003 George Washington's Birthday Celebration will decorate the outdoors with color and patriotism as Texas A&M International University holds its Twilight Pops WBCA Kickoff Concert on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 2-5 p.m. on the University Plaza.

Admission is free of charge and the event is open to Los Dos Laredos.

Dr. Gilberto Soto, event coordinator, TAMIU associate professor of music and department of fine and performing arts chair, said the concert will feature performances by TAMIU's music and dance groups including the Symphonic Band, Chorale, Mariachi Internacional, Dance Performance Troupe, Ballet Folklórico, Classical Guitar Ensemble and the Flamenco Troupe.

In addition, a patriotic costume contest is scheduled, in which children of all ages are invited to participate. Contest categories include infant -3 year olds, 4-7, 8-12 and most original. Trophies will be awarded to winners and certificates will be awarded to the first three places in each category.

"This non-alcoholic event, in which the entire TAMIU family participates with music and dance, provides a perfect opportunity to officially kick off the much anticipated WBCA celebration," Dr. Soto said, "As usual, we are proud to host this event on campus and welcome the community to witness the construction of our multimillion dollar Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, scheduled to open late this Spring."

The Center, an ultra-modern facility and a highlight of TAMIU's campus, will feature a symphony and recital hall, theater, lobby, art gallery, music rehearsal hall, black box theatre, visual arts complex, communication complex, lecture halls, dance studios, sculpture garden, music library, costume shops, classrooms, painting studios, green rooms and various faculty offices.

Soto said the Twilight Pops Concert is also designed so that families can enjoy a fun, outdoor activity together.

"We encourage everyone to bring their lawn chairs and blankets, sit back, and rejoice in an afternoon full of melody, color and rhythms," Soto said.

Refreshments will be available during the event and ample parking will be provided.
