A two-day academic conference at Texas A&M International University will highlight the research initiatives undertaken by students of the College of Arts and Humanities April 3-4.

The Texas A&M International University College of Arts and Humanities Academic Conference is the first initiative of its kind for the College, said dean Dr. Nasser Momayezi.

"This is an important new initiative for us and one that we think will foster a remarkable opportunity for the exchange of research, ideas, strategies, hopes and dreams," Dr. Momayezi said.

The University's concurrent, undergraduate and graduate students will present an impressive range of research that includes South Texas transitions, safety and security on the US-Mexico border, societal stigmas and Judeo-Christian Constructions. Also offered are meditations on death, explorations of the sexual politics of family and society, the creative writing process, the ongoing struggle for civil rights, music and movements and more.

"I believe our students' research offers an enviable benchmark that easily rivals that expected at larger and more-established universities. The effort by these students and the guidance provided by their respective faculty members is indicative of the richly supportive environment here that allows for fertile and relevant academic research to be conducted... and through this new Conference, shared with peers and others," Momayezi explained.

"We are most appreciative of the efforts of the Conference Committee, headed by Dr. Deborah Blackwell, who organized this impressive first effort," he said.

The Conference opens on Thursday, April 3 at 12:30 p.m. with sessions in Western Hemispheric Trade Center room 103. Student presenters will offer three or four presentations per topic as follows:

1-2:15 - Transitions in South Texas; 2:30-3:45 p.m. - Longing and Belonging: Creative Writing; 4:00-5:15 p.m. - Politics and Accountability; 5:30-6:45 p.m.- Meditations on Death, and 7-8:15 p.m. - Sexual Politics in Family and Society.

The Conference continues Friday, April 3 from 12 noon to 6:00 p.m. in Western Hemispheric Trade Center room 103 as follows:

12-1:15 p.m. - Safety and Security on the Border; 1:30-2:45 p.m. - The Struggle for Civil Rights; 3-4:15 p.m. - Societal Stigmas and 4:30-5:45 p.m. - Judeo-Christian Constructions.
