Bilingual, Biliterate, Bicultural Conference This Weekend at TAMIU

The meaning of being bilingual, bicultural and biliterate today will be explored this weekend in a conference scheduled at Texas A&M International University.

Organized by the TAMIU College of Education, the Conference, "Bilingual, Biliterate, & Bicultural: Goals Within our Reach," aims to offer local and area teachers a professional development opportunity.

The Conference is the first regional bilingual education conference of its kind in Laredo and will feature a variety of outstanding presenters.

The Conference begins Friday at 1:30 p.m. and continues through 6:30 p.m. in the University's Western Hemispheric Trade Center and Student Center. The day's keynote speaker is Maria Seidner, director of Bilingual Education for the Texas Education Agency, who will report on the status of bilingual education in Texas at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday's sessions begin at 9 a.m. and continue through 1:30p.m. The lunch keynote speaker is Dr. Arnulfo Ramirez, a Louisiana State University professor, who will discuss the challenges and opportunities to developing bilingual proficiency. (photos)

Conference cost is $40.00 per participant and includes Saturday's luncheon. Proceeds from the Conference support TAMIU Bilingual Education Student Scholarships.
