TAMIU Studio Art Student Works On Exhibit

The talented and thoughtful works of Texas A&M International University students enrolled in Studio Art classes this Spring semester are showcased in an exhibit now underway at TAMIU.

A reception for students and their parents kicked off the exhibit Thursday, April 24.

The Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Corridor Gallery and Lounge, located on the fourth floor of the Library, will be home for works from drawing, advanced drawing and painting students, said Janet Krueger, associate professor of art.

"These works are indicative of the tremendous talent our students possess and we urge community members to visit the campus and view the works of students enrolled in studio art classes being taught this semester. The works will be on display through mid-June," Krueger said.

Among media in which students are presenting works are paintings in oil and acrylic, drawings in charcoal, pencil and pastel, as well as mixed media and sculptural pieces.

"Students in the Advanced Drawing class each chose one artist to work with throughout the semester exploring the themes, techniques, and history unique to each artist. The students' work springs from their own investigations of their chosen artist. Students in the painting class developed landscapes, self-portraits and merged techniques from master and contemporary artists in subjects of their choice. Drawing I & II students developed their skills in observation and manipulation of a variety of media," Krueger explained.

She said students and the University's fine and peforming arts faculty are all looking forward to the coming move to TAMIU's impressive new Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, now nearing completion as part of the University's Phase III expansion.

"The Center will have remarkable gallery, exhibit and studio spaces and I know all of us will be happy to be the first to utilize it and help to initiate our growing fine and performing arts program," she said.

The over $21.5 million-facility is 121,745 gross square feet in size and will include two theatres, a symphony hall, exhibit areas, classrooms, studios, rehearsal and performance rooms. The Center will be ready for student use in the Fall.

The Campaign for the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts is underway and is being coordinated by the University's Office for Institutional Advancement. HEB of San Antonio provided an inaugural gift of $250,000.

University office hours for the Spring Semester are from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Effective May 16, the University's summer hours will be from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

The University will be closed on Fridays.
