A.R. Sánchez Lecture Presents Constitutional Law Scholar on Gun Control

A noted historian and constitutional law expert will speak on gun control during the fourth and last lecture of the 2003 A.R. Sánchez Distinguished Lecture Series at Texas A&M International University Wednesday, April 16 at 7 pm. at the Student Center Ballroom.

Dr. Harold M. Hyman, William P. Hobby professor emeritus of history, and director of the Center for the History of Leadership Institution at Rice University, will lecture on "Back to the Firing Line: The Constitution's Second Amendment and Gun Control."

The lecture is free and open to the public.

The long-standing debate on the Second Amendment and its original intent will be covered during Dr. Hyman's lecture as well as what has often been described as the "trip-wire" issue dividing Americans on both sides of gun control.

Born in 1924, Dr. Hyman served from 1941-1945 in the U.S. Marines. After returning to civilian life, he completed his undergraduate education at the University of California-Los Angeles, where he received his bachelor's degree in history. He completed all his graduate work at Columbia University, earning an M.A. in 1950 and a Ph.D. in 1952.

His publications include numerous books reprints, conference proceedings, articles and essays. Some of his books include "Era of the Oath; Northern Loyalty Tests During the Civil War and Reconstruction of the Constitution," "Quiet Past and Story Present? War Powers in American History," "Oleander Oddyssey: The Kempners of Galveston, Texas, 1854-1980s," "The Reconstruction Justice of Salmon P. Chase: In Re Turner and Texas v. White," and "Craftmanship and Character: A History of the Vinson & Elkins Law Firm of Houston, 1917-1990s."
