Local artist, poet and playwright Raquel Valle Sentíes will be the featured writer in the Thursday, April 24 installation of "Voices in the Monte," a writers series presented by Texas A&M International University's Writing Center.

Valle Sentíes will offer a presentation for students on her work as poet and playwright from 3-4 p.m. on Thursday, April 24 in Student Center room 120. She will present a public reading of her works from 7:30- 9 p.m. in Bullock Hall 114.

"Voices in the Monte" is intended to provide an opportunity for students, members of the University's service community, and the public to visit with local, regional and national writers who will share their personal vision of writing and finding their voice. The Series is made possible by funding provided by TAMIU and a Title V Grant.

Previous presenters have included Jesse G. Herrera and Tammy Gómez.

An appearance on Monday, May 5, by Brownsville native Oscar Casares is being finalized.

In September, 2002 National Book Award nominee, poet and children's story writer Naomi Shihab Nye of San Antonio will be the first of two writers visiting the University in the fall. Organizers hope that the "Voices in the Monte" Writers Series will encourage a rich interaction among people from the University, the city, and the surrounding area with visiting writers.
