TAMIU College of Ed Gets Nod for Alternative Certification Program

Texas A&M International University will establish an Alternative Certification Program under the federal No Child Left Behind Act as approved and authorized by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).

The program is a post-baccalaureate program which complies with extensive criteria as outlined by the US Department of Education.

Rosa Maria Vida, dean of the College of Education, explained that the Alternative Certification Program offers degree-holding individuals an opportunity to join the teaching profession after completing a highly structured program.

"Those admitted to the program must meet College of Education admission standards as well as any special program criteria. Candidates who complete the program and demonstrate subject area mastery can be hired by school districts and considered 'highly qualified' in accordance with applicable federal law," Dr. Vida explained.

As required by the USDE, the program must provide a high-quality, professional development that is sustained, intensive and classroom focused; intensive supervision with structured guidance and teacher support; allows candidates to function as a teacher for a specified period of time not to exceed three years, and requires the teacher to demonstrate satisfactory progress towards full certification required by the State.
