A Texas A&M International University student has been named the recipient of a prestigious accounting award from the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA), San Antonio CPA Society.

Raquel Garcia-Rios, a TAMIU senior, received the TSCPA Accounting Excellence Award. She was introduced by Dr. Bill Cargill, professor of accounting and chair of TAMIU's Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance.

Garcia-Rios was recently honored at a reception hosted by the San Antonio CPA Society at the Petroleum Club of San Antonio. She is also the first student to graduate May 9 from TAMIU's D.D. Hachar Honors Program.

Six other students representing universities including Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary's University, Texas Lutheran University, Trinity University, the University of Texas at San Antonio and University of the Incarnate Word also received TSCPA Accounting Excellence Awards.

The Accounting Excellence Award was established in 1969 by the Educational Foundation of the TSCPA as an annual award. It is given to one senior accounting student showing high intelligence, talent and ambition from each Texas University participating in the Foundation's programs.

Some 50 schools participate in the program which recognizes a few of the exceptional students who aspire to be part of the demanding accounting profession.
