TAMIU Summer Camps, Workshops to Stimulate Children's Minds

This summer, Texas A&M International University will keep children busy and active through numerous camps and workshops designed to stimulate minds.

Kinder Camp 2003 is designed for 3-5 year olds and will be held Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m., June 9-July 10, except July 4.

In Kinder Camp, children will learn math, science, reading, writing and art. Children must choose three subjects and parents must submit a wallet-sized picture of their children for their identification cards. Tuition is $270.

Also, TAMIU Children's Summer Workshop will be offered for children in first through sixth grades. Workshops will be held Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m., June 9 - July 10, except July 4.

Students participating in the workshops can choose three subjects from computer education; math; science; language, culture and tradition; writing; singing and playing; painting and arts and crafts. Parents must submit a wallet-sized picture of their children for identification cards. Tuition is $270.

In addition, the Summer Academy, designed for seventh through 11th graders, will be held June 9 - July 10, except July 4.

The Summer Academy prepares students for the PSAT and SAT exams, but also offers fine arts courses separately.

The PSAT and SAT preparation will be held Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Tuition is $210.

The fine arts courses will be held Monday -Thursday, 1 -5 p.m. Tuition is $300. Included in the courses are science, social studies, computers, art, ballet folklórico, voice, guitar, drama and dance. Students can choose one course each hour for the fine arts.

Also, the Summer Academy of Fine Arts, designed for kinder through 11th graders, will be held Monday-Thursday, 1-5 p.m., June 9-July 10, except July 4.

Academy subject areas available include computers, art, ballet folklórico, voice, guitar, drama and dance. Tuition is $250.

Registration for children summer camps and workshops is ongoing through June 5, but early registration is advised.

For those students wishing to learn reading and writing techniques, the Hinojosa Reading Research Center at TAMIU still has 15 spaces available for students in third grade interested in the Kid's Summer Literacy Camp, offered July 7-29, 9:30 -11:30 a.m. Tuition is $25 for the three weeks and registration is ongoing through June 10.
