Laredo Public Library, TAMIU Join in Kids Summer Literacy Camp

The Laredo Public Library and Texas A&M International University's Eduardo M. Hinojosa Reading Research Center are teaming up to boost literacy in Laredo through classes that will introduce young students to reading and writing skills.

On Monday, June 2, the Laredo City Council approved a resolution allowing the two entities to collaborate on a "Summer Literacy Camp" for incoming third and fourth graders.

The Camp, which will be held July 7-24 at the Laredo Public Library, will expose area students to techniques in reading and writing through numerous exercises. The Camp will be free and open to students entering the third and fourth grades.

Gloria Canseco, associate director of the Hinojosa Reading Research Center, said the Laredo Public Library and TAMIU have a joint purpose in promoting literacy.

"This new Camp is a result of a strong demand that exists locally for summer literacy programs," Canseco said, "We are glad that we will be able to jointly offer this program because similar camps offered at TAMIU have quickly reached maximum capacity."

Canseco said those interested in participating in the Camp should register early before class begins in order to secure a space.

"There are 20 spaces available in this camp and we urge students who are interested to sign up as soon as possible at the Hinojosa Reading Research Center," Canseco said.
