Texas A&M International University's Eduardo M. Hinojosa Reading Research Center has received word that the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Education has extended authorized funding for the program through July 2004.

Center director Dr. Barbara Greybeck said the news was welcome and timely.

"This is tremendous good news and will allow us to continue to work towards fulfilling our mission without any reduction in services," she explained.

Dedicated in ceremonies last month, the Center is named after retired TAMIU reading professor Dr. Eduardo M. Hinojosa.

The Center targets enhancing research related to linguistically and culturally diverse students' reading abilities and also determines teaching strategies that assist students in becoming skillful readers. It also works to develop and disseminate effective teaching models, which will help children learn to read effectively.

Last week, the Center announced the launching of a separate fund-raising drive aimed at supporting critical tutoring sessions for underprivileged children that will start in August.

The fund-raising drive will supplement the federal support renewed this week. Additional efforts to secure private support for programs and foundation funding for operations continue.

"While our federal funding has been extended, new initiatives like this require the infusion of funds that can come from like-minded individuals and organizations who partner with the Center to help support these critical tutoring sessions," Greybeck said.

She explained that the effort aims to provide children with customized sessions to help them overcome reading obstacles. A donation of $100 can provide for five such sessions for a deserving child.

Since the Center's founding in 2001, it has posted some remarkable outreach efforts and provided important new research and service opportunities.

"From individual success stories to helping nearby Zapata County Independent School District realize district reading goals for elementary age students, we've helped these students move towards becoming skillful readers better equipped for the increasingly complex challenges of our world," Greybeck noted.
