Scholarships Available for Graduate Bilingual Education Study at TAMIU

A new scholarship is now available for individuals seeking a Master's degree in Bilingual Education at Texas A&M International University.

Twelve graduate scholarships, dubbed the "TAMIU Bilingual Education Scholarship," will be available beginning this Fall at the University, said Dr. Miroslava Vargas, associate professor of education with the University's College of Education.

"We are happy to announce the scholarships'availability and encourage all those that are interested to complete their application, available from our Office of Financial Aid, and submit prior to the deadline of Aug. 15, 2003, said Dr. Vargas.

Support for the scholarships come from funds generated by the first bilingual, biliterate and bicultural conference held this past March at TAMIU, she said.

"This was a Conference sponsored by The Texas A&M University System's Board of Regents' Regents Initiative as a teacher recruitment and retention effort. We were also joined by Laredo and United independent school districts and the Texas Migrant Council. Participants' Conference fees and generous support provided by our keynote speaker, Dr. Arnulfo Ramirez, helped make these scholarships possible," she explained.

The Scholarships will provide assistance for graduate students for both Fall and Spring Semesters.

General Registration for Fall 2003 at TAMIU takes place Friday, August 22, and classes begin Monday, August 25. Late registration, with late fees applied, will begin Aug. 25 and continue to Aug. 29. Call the Registrar's office at 326.2250 for more information.

With State budget cuts, the University is observing a four-day, 10-hour a day schedule this summer with office hours from 7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Offices are closed Fridays.
