TAMIU Student Housing Nearing Capacity for Fall

On-campus housing at Texas A&M International University is quickly approaching capacity, and Fall semester students are encouraged to have completed leases and deposits submitted as soon as possible.

Dr. Tom Corti, dean of Student Services, said the 250-bed University Village has proven popular for both local and out-of-town students.

"It's a great facility, and has proven popular with our students. At this point we only have about 15 spaces available and they will be provided to those students who get their signed leases and deposits in first," Dr. Corti explained.

Although the Village will soon be at capacity, Corti said the University will continue to help students to identify other housing availabilities in the city.

"We are identifying other housing opportunities and will be able to provide housing leads and other opportunities for students here in the community. Listings will be available at our Office of Student Development and in the University Village Management Office," he explained.

Corti said that the housing crunch is indicative of the University's growth and popularity as a regional University of choice and bodes well for its planned construction of additional on-campus housing.

"We're planning an August groundbreaking for our new residential learning community, which will be located on the east side of the campus. We have an aggressive construction schedule and project an opening in May of 2004," he said.

The new complex is slated to have 428 beds including special amenities such as a community center with big screen TV, a large pool, lit sand volleyball and basketball courts, a fitness center, a multi-purpose meeting/classroom, computer lab and study/TV lounges on each floor with full kitchens.

With State budget cuts, the University is observing a four-day, 10-hour a day schedule this summer with office hours from 7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Offices are closed Fridays.
