Tuition Deregulation Has Little Impact at TAMIU, Leaders Say

While other universities are increasing tuition fees substantially in light of the passage of House Bill 3015, known as the Tuition Deregulation Bill, Texas A&M International University administrators say the impact at TAMIU will be slight.

"There are some planned new fees that will go into affect this Fall, but these are anticipated fees that were voted on by students last year. An overall increase in fees for a 12-hour full-time load this Fall will be to $1,379, up $177.50 from last Fall's $1,201.50. These fees will support expanded services," said Dr. Tom Corti, dean of Student Services.

Dr. Corti said that higher education in general has been among the hardest hit by spending cuts mandated by the State in response to the $9.9 billion budget shortfall.

"It's been tough and hard decisions have been made, but we have tried not to reduce services to our students. The summer reduction to a four-day, 10-hour a day workweek has also been implemented to help cut costs. The passage of tuition deregulation will in no way effect our student services at this time. Tuition at TAMIU remains among the lowest of state universities in Texas," he said.

"Our University is committed to keeping student costs down and is aggressively seeking external funding for needed initiatives to help ensure students have increased access to scholarships and program support," Corti noted.

Regular Registration for the Fall Semester 2003 is Aug. 22. Classes begin Aug. 25. Late Registration, with late fees applied, will take place from Aug. 25-Aug. 29.

With State budget cuts, the University is observing a four-day, 10-hour a day schedule this summer with office hours from 7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Offices are closed Fridays.
