TAMIU Breaks Ground for New Campus Housing Aug. 26

A tangible indication of Texas A&M International University's phenomenal growth will be the groundbreaking for the second new student housing complex on campus Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 10 a.m.

Dubbed a residential learning community, the 424-bed three-story complex will be located on the east side of the campus and constructed by American Campus Communities. Architects for the project are Dallas-based

Craycroft Price Architects, AIA. The 127,084-square-foot complex will be constructed on six acres of campus and will include 280 parking spaces.

"This will be a state of the art facility that will reflect the latest philosophy in residential learning facilities," said Dr. Tom Corti, TAMIU vice president of Student Services.

The courtyard-style facility will include gated security card access, a community center, fenced swimming pool, lighted sand volleyball courts and a basketball court. Construction is estimated to be completed by May 2004.

The facility will provide four different floor plans. Rooms will be available with shared bathroom facilities and large TV lounges with kitchens and study-dining areas. Residence directors and assistants will be located in each of the four-units.

The stand-alone community center will have laundry facilities, fitness room, meeting room, social lounge and a computer room. The new facility will complement the 250-bed University Village that has been operating at capacity for some time.

"University Village is a great facility, but it's clearly time that we construct additional housing consistent with our growth and popularity as a regional University of choice," Dr. Corti said.

"With the opening of the new residential learning community, University Village will be rededicated as graduate and married student housing. The new learning community will be home to undergraduate students. The new facility will also provide housing for our expanding summer programs and our new faculty-in-residence program with visiting professors living and teaching their classes in the complex," he said.

Registration for the Fall Semester is Friday Aug. 22. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 25. Late registration, with late fees applied, will take place Aug. 25-29.
