If you already enjoy dancing flamenco but would like to learn new techniques to improve your art, get your castanets ready...Texas A&M International University will offer an intensive, two-day dance workshop under the direction of noted dance teacher Rogelio Rodríguez.

Scheduled Aug. 16, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1:30-5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., the workshop will be held at TAMIU's brand-new, $22 million Center for the Fine and Performing Arts.

There is no fee for workshop participation. Because of high demand for the workshop, those interested must sign up as soon as possible by contacting Bede Leyendecker, assistant professor of Dance.

Sponsored in part by the Texas Commission on the Arts and the City of Laredo, the workshop is appropriate for intermediate and advanced dancers. Participants must be at least 15 years old.

Rodríguez, a native Laredoan, returns yearly to TAMIU to teach the workshop. He has danced most of his life and has trained with notables such as José Greco Sr., Nana Lorca, Luisa Triana, Luis Montero and Roberto Amaral. His credits also include that of lead dancer for 'Charo' in Las Vegas and he has performed with Jerry Lewis, Joey Bishop, Dom DeLouise, and Jim Nabors.

He has choreographed and performed with the Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony and Houston Pops Orchestras and is the owner and director of the Rodríguez Dance Academy in Houston.

For further information, please contact Bede Leyendecker at 326-2625, e-mail bleyendecker@tamiu.edu or visit offices located in the new Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, room 115.

With State budget cuts, the University is observing a four-day, 10-hour a day schedule this summer with office hours from 7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Offices are closed Fridays.

On Thursday, August 14, regular office hours from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, will resume.
