Samuel B. Cantrell made history at Texas A&M International University this week when he became the University's first student to receive a four-year Army ROTC Scholarship in ceremonies held in the Student Center.

Dr. Ray Keck, University president, said Cantrell was an important role model for other students and had worked diligently to receive the recognition.

"This scholarship is truly a salute to your intelligence, hard-work, commitment to and love for our country," Dr. Keck noted.

The scholarship will provide tuition up to $17,000 for Fall and Spring semester study, books and a monthly stipend. Summer tuition up to $5,000 is also provided, as are books.

Joining Cantrell at the reception were his parents, Angie and Charles Cantrell and representatives from the University's military science department, including 1st Lt. Dan Williams, enrollment operations officer, Captain Ruben Irizarry-Guzman, assistant professor of military science, SFC Michael Gilman, military science instructor, and Susan Burts, administrative assistant.

The University reactivated its ROTC chapter after a 30-year absence last year. Joe Garcia, the University's vice president for finance and administration, and first director of that ROTC program, was also on hand.
