Naomi Shihab Nye at TAMIU 'Monte' Writers Series Sept. 25

Award- winning poet and novelist Naomi Shihab Nye will be the next professional writer to appear as part of the "Voices in the Monte Writers Series" presented by Texas A&M International University's Writing Center, on Thursday, Sept. 25.

Nye's visit, scheduled through the TAMIU Writing Center, will include a talk on the craft of writing called "Fishing in a Bucket: Life Alongside the Rivers of Words" at 11 a.m. in the Student Center, room 236. That evening, she will read and sign books at 7:30 p.m. in Bullock Hall, room 101. Nye will also be a guest on "Drive Time" on KLNT Radio 1490 AM from 5 to 6 p.m.

Nye's parentage, Palestinian and American, led to her growing up in St. Louis and Jerusalem. She graduated from Trinity University and now lives in San Antonio. She has received awards for poetry and fiction, including six Best Books awards for her young adult novel Habibi.

She edited six prize-winning anthologies of poetry for young readers, including This Same Sky, What Have You Lost? and Salting the Ocean. She is a 2003 Lannan Fellow, a recent Guggenheim Fellow and Library of Congress Witter Bynner Fellow.

"Voices in the Monte" is intended to provide an opportunity for students, members of the University's service community, and the public to visit with local, regional and national writers who will share their personal vision of writing and finding their voice. The Series is made possible by funding provided by TAMIU and a Title V Grant.

Previous presenters have included Jesse G. Herrera, Raquel Valle Sentíes, Oscar Cásares, and Tammy Gómez.

Writing Center hours for the Fall semester are from 8:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. Monday-Thursdayand from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Fridays. The Center is closed on Saturdays but open on Sundays from 2-6 p.m.
