Young Artists Program at TAMIU Features Children's Music and Dance Classes

Children, teens and adults interested in appreciating the arts while learning new skills are invited to take courses in guitar, voice and dance at Texas A&M International University.

The Young Artists Program at TAMIU features classes in guitar, voice, dance combinations and ballet folklórico.

Voice and guitar classes will take place Oct. 7 - Dec. 18 with two levels being offered: one for 6 to 9-year-olds at 4 p.m. and another for 10 to 13-year-olds at 5 p.m. Both voice and guitar classes will run concurrently on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tuition is $40 per month and a $10 discount will apply when the session is paid in full and at once for the three months of class.

Students taking guitar must purchase a textbook, bring their own guitar and a footstool.

Children's dance combination classes are currently underway and will continue until Dec. 19. Students can sign up at any time for the class, which includes ballet, tap and flamenco lessons. Classes will be held Monday-Thursday from 4-5:30 p.m. Class schedules are Monday for 9 to 11-year-olds, Tuesday for 6 to 8 year-olds, Wednesday for 2 to 4-year-olds and Thursday for 4 to 6-year-olds. Tuition is $40 per month.

Students in the dance combination class are required to purchase a uniform leotard, pink tights, pink ballet shoes and tap shoes.

The Young Artists Program also offers ballet folklórico classes for children ages 5-10. Classes are underway and will continue until Nov. 22. Classes meet Saturdays and they are held 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. for 8-10 year-olds; 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. for 5-7 year-olds; and 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. for boys 5 to 9-year-olds.

All students in ballet folklórico must wear shoes with heels and boys can wear casual clothing. Girls may wear black clothing, however, a white leotard and white tights are preferred. Also, a solid color ballet folklórico practice skirt is required for girls. A skirt pattern is available upon request and purchase of costume is required for public performances.

Tuition for ballet folklórico is $25 per month.

In addition to children's classes, TAMIU offers dance technique classes for teens and adults. Classes are underway and will continue until Dec. 19. Class schedules are Monday, from 5:30 -6:30 p.m., for ballet; Tuesday, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for flamenco; Tuesday, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for tap; and Thursday, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. for jazz.

Tuition is $35 per month if a student only takes one dance class per week. However, it will be $45 per month for two classes and $55 per month for three per week.
