Good News on the Way for Teachers with 'Make the Connection' at TAMIU

In the midst of dire predictions that teacher shortages will affect future classrooms, good news is on the way.

That's because more than 800 potential teachers will be able to explore teaching careers through an outreach program between Texas A&M International University and Laredo Community College.

"Make the Connection" is the theme of an Open House scheduled Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. at TAMIU's Center for the Fine and Performing Arts auditorium.

Caroline Hickle, director of the Community College Teacher Center, explained that the opportunity expands on the strong linkage between both higher education institutions.

"'Make the Connection' is a chance for the large number of LCC transfer students considering teaching as a career to themselves establish a link with the University's College of Education to help ease their transition into teacher preparation programs," she explained, "With state guidelines, testing and standards in place, this can be a daunting experience. Our efforts through 'Make the Connection' are designed to help students anticipate the process and prepare themselves accordingly."

The evening program will afford students opportunities to get an extensive overview of programs available at the College of Education and meet with the faculty members and staff members that will be working with them to realize their dreams of teaching.

"We've prepared both a formal and informal program including presentations by our College of Education faculty and an opportunity to attend a social at the College of Education afterwards. We think the evening will provide students with the answers they need to proceed and, of course, establish some vital connections," she said.

TAMIU's College of Education has historically helped to bring the majority of the area's teaching professionals into classrooms for over 34 years, she reminded.

That history and the University's long-standing partnerships with area school districts and links to state accrediting agencies such as the State Board for Educator Certification and others, creates a rich and relevant learning and teaching environment, she noted.

The College of Education offers nine undergraduate degrees and seven graduate degrees. Endorsements and professional certificate programs are also available in various fields. A collaborative Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction is offered with Texas A&M University.
