World Food Day Observance Slated at TAMIU Oct. 16

For the third consecutive year, Texas A&M International University will be home to the local World Food Day observance on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 12 noon in Western Hemispheric Trade Center room 111.

The simple rice and beans luncheon is free of charge and open to the community.

The event is sponsored by the Laredo Regional Food Bank (LRFB) and is intended to bring attention to the worldwide observance of hunger throughout the world and efforts enact global solutions.

Felipe Contreras, director of operations for the LRFB and a TAMIU graduate, said the group believes that hosting the event at an institution of higher education also helps the group to reinforce the event theme and LRFB's mission.

"These students will someday lead efforts to end world hunger and by bringing this event here, we are giving them an opportunity to become engaged in addressing the issue globally and locally. Students also organize a highly successful on-campus canned food drive throughout the month of October which does much to supplement our LRFB pantry," he explained.

In addition to the luncheon, the group will hear from a guest keynote speaker and present the Donor Award and the Dr. Sandra C. Richard Memorial Award in honor of the late Dr. Richard, a longtime member of the TAMIU faculty and founding member of the LRFB.
