Harpsichordist Sylvia Hazlerig to Present Concert Feb. 9

Former Laredoan and harpsichordist Sylvia Hazlerig will present a concert as part of Texas A&M International University's Department of Fine and Performing Arts Distinguished Music Series Monday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Hazlerig will interpret the works of composers including William Byrd, Henry Purcell, Francois Couperin, Georg Philipp Telemann, Pietro Domenico Paradisi, Philipp Emanuel Bach, and Domenico Scarlatti.

In addition, she will play a "Concerto in G. Major" by Telemann, accompanied by Jennifer Cahill Clark on viola; a "Sonata No. 2 in E-flat Major" by Johann Sebastian Bach, accompanied by Dr. Susan Berdahl on flute; and a "Concerto in D Major" by Antonio Vivaldi, accompanied by the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble, which is under the direction of Dr. Gilberto D. Soto.

Hazlerig was born in Wyoming, but spent most of her life in Texas. She holds a master of arts degree in music literature from Central Missouri State University and a bachelor of music composition and theory degree from the University of North Texas. She formed part of the music and dance department faculty at LCC for 19 years, where she taught piano, strings, music theory, music appreciation and music literature.

Upon retiring in 1997, she moved to the mountains of Colorado, where she remains active as a performer and composer.
