TAMIU's Twilight Pops Concert to Officially Kick Off WBCA Celebrations

Texas A&M International University will officially kick off the 2004 George Washington's Birthday Celebration with a colorful and patriotic presentation of its annual Twilight Pops WBCA Concert Friday, Feb. 6 from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Admission is free of charge and the event is open to the community of Los Dos Laredos.

Dr. Gilberto Soto, event coordinator and chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, said the concert will feature performances by TAMIU's music and dance groups including the TAMIU Orchestra, directed by Brendan Townsend; TAMIU Ballet Folklórico, directed by Gabriela Mendoza-García; the Symphonic Band, directed by Dr. Michael Stone; and the Classical Spanish Ballet, under the direction of Bede Leyendecker. Also performing are the Classical Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Gilberto Soto; the Flute Ensemble, directed by Dr. Susan Berdahl; Collegium Musicum, a vocal ensemble directed by Dr. Fritz Gechter; and the Mariachi Internacional, directed by Yamil Yunes.

In addition, the third annual Children's Patriotic Costume Concert will take place in the Recital Hall. Contest categories include 0-3 year olds, 4-7, 8-12 and most original. Trophies and certificates will be awarded to the first three places in each category and no entry fee is required.

"We are proud to present the Twilight Pops Concert in its fullest splendor again this year," said Dr. Soto, "As many already know, this non-alcoholic event is designed for the whole family to enjoy music and dance while officially opening the WBCA celebration. We welcome the community to participate in this event and visit the newly opened Center for the Fine and Performing Arts."
