On Saturday, February 14, the right move could give one high school senior free tuition to Texas A&M International University. At the United Chess Region VII Scholastic Chess Championship, which will begin at 8 a.m. at Alexander High School, TAMIU will award the winner of the high school section a $4,000 scholarship.

Lakshmana Viswanath, director of Computer and Telecommunication Services at TAMIU and senior tournament director, explained this is the first time a regional tourney is held in Laredo.

"We're very excited to offer the chess players of Laredo this opportunity. There will be five sections: High School (9-12 grade), Middle School (6 -8 grade), Elementary (K - 5/6 grade), Primary (K-3 grade) and Open (collegiate and adult), so everyone will have a chance to enjoy competitive play," said Viswanath.

He said 10 trophies and 5 medals will be awarded per section, as well as trophies for the top point getters in the high school, middle school, elementary and primary. Team trophies will also be awarded.

"In addition, scholarships will be awarded by TAMIU and by Laredo Community College and door prizes will be distributed, making the play not only fun, but extremely rewarding as well!" Viswanath added.

All players must be members of United States Chess Federation, but membership can be obtained by contacting Viswanath before the tournament. Entry fees are $21, he said.

Viswanath said he is expecting a good turnout, as the Pre-regional tournament, held on Saturday, Jan. 31, was well attended.

"We had more than 100 people play, so I know that there is a strong interest in chess in our community. The play during the Regional Scholastic Championship should be that much more exciting," he said.
