TAMIU Medieval Festival Promises Food, Fun, Games March 4

Turkey legs, music, poetry readings and fun will await the Laredo community at Texas A&M International University's 4th Annual Medieval Festival Thursday, March 4 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the University Green.

Organized by Sigma Tau Delta, TAMIU's chapter of the International English Honor Society, the Festival is free and open to the public. Student organizations will also be selling food at various booths located in front of the east entrance of the Student Center.

Elvira Mante, Sigma Tau Delta president, said the event is designed to showcase the culture and literature of the Middle Ages.

"We have planned this Festival with both adults and children in mind," Mante said, "We encourage everyone to come and enjoy the games, foods, costume contests and music that will take you back to the old times in Europe."

Featured performers include fire juggler Kaj Fjelstad as well as Baul Teatro, a group from Mexico that will provide a puppet show in Spanish, Mante said.

"In addition, participants will be able to see medieval martial arts and listen to a 'Mio Cid' Spanish Medieval poetry reading as well as Chaucer's 'General Prologue' reading," Mante said.

Mante said the event has been growing every year and that numerous student organizations are participating in making the event truly authentic.

"We encourage everyone to wear a medieval costume and enter a world of fantasy and magic where you can always lock a friend or an enemy in stocks or take a picture before we behead you," Mante said jokingly.
