Socialist Party Vice President Candidate to Lecture at TAMIU

Mary Alice Herbert, the Vice Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party U.S.A., and former gubernatorial candidate of Vermont, will present a lecture titled, "Capitalism or Democracy?" Wednesday, February 11 at 6 p.m. at Texas A&M International University's Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 116.

The event will be hosted by the TAMIU Political Science Association and the Alliance for Peace and Justice. The lecture, followed by questions from the audience, will address the issue of whether capitalism and democracy are compatible,

Herbert, a retired school teacher from Vermont, earned her master's degree in women's studies and early childhood education from Antioch New England and her bachelor's degree in education from High Point College in North Carolina.

Between 1984 and 1996, Herbert was a candidate of Vermont's Liberty Union Party for the state legislature and several times for Vermont Secretary of State.

In 1996, she ran against Howard Dean for governor and took him to task for opposing a single-payer health plan supported by Democrats in the Vermont legislature. She ranked third in a crowded field of eight candidates. She currently is working to gain ballot access for the 2004 election for the Socialist Party U.S.A., America's democratic socialist party.

Walter Brown is the party's presidential nominee.
