With the beginning of a new year and a new semester, many people made resolutions to get healthy. But as the gray of winter continues, those promises can fall by the wayside. CNN.com, citing an eDiets.com report, reported recently that many diet and fitness goals do not last until February.

TAMIU students who recognize themselves in this group should consider attending the Wellness Fair at Texas A&M International University on Wednesday, February 25 from 12 to 5 p.m. in the Student Center. Sponsored by the Office of Student Counseling Services and Student Health Services, the fair's theme is "Body, Mind and Soul" and will provide participants information, support and tools to live well.

Dr. Terence Hannigan, director of Student Counseling Services, explained the fair will help students live and feel better.

"The Wellness Fair will heighten awareness of how we can make healthier choices. This event will also focus on sensible recreation - making good decisions about eating, drinking, driving and sex," said Hannigan.

He explained one event, to be held in the Student Center cafeteria at 12 p.m., will be the appearance of Jeff Charlebois, a "sit-down" comedian, who will bring levity to the serious subject of disabilities.

Angie Cantrell, director of Student Health Services, said on-site screening tests will be available.

"Screening for a variety of health problems will be offered for students and staff. Tests for diabetes, cholesterol, body fat percentage, blood pressure, eating disorders and depression will be available. People should also stop by to experience a brief shoulder/back massage provided by a professional massage therapist," said Cantrell.

For those following or considering following the popular Atkins or South Beach diet, Cantrell suggests attending a lecture from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium.

"Folks can attend and listen to a registered dietician from Laredo Medical Center present 'Low Carb vs. Low Fat: That is the Question.' With the popularity of low carb diets, it's important that people educate themselves to ensure a healthy life style," explained Cantrell.
