A noted Mexican authority on Buddhism will present a special lecture at Texas A&M International University on Tuesday, May 4 from 6-8 p.m. in Student Center 236.

Marco Antonio Karam, president and founder of Casa del Tibet in Mexico City, will present an English language lecture on "Lucid Dreaming and the Yoga of the Dream State: A Psychophysiological Perspective." The lecture is free of charge and open to the public.

Karam's lecture will offer a comparative study between the Tibetan Buddhist discipline of dream yoga and the modern psychological discipline of lucid dreaming. The two are profoundly different: one rooted in the Buddhist philosophy while lucid dreaming comes from scientific materialism. Dream yoga encourages all to view all waking events as a dream, whereas lucid dreaming encourages a series of "status checks," to be performed to see whether one is or is not dreaming.

Karam, nephew of former Mexican president De La Madrid, was educated at Mexico City's Universidad La Salle and has completed additional degrees and studies at Harvard University, the University of Heidelberg, the Naropa Institute of Boulder; Tribuvan University of Nepal, Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamsala, India; the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, El Colegio de México and the Institute of Foreign Languages of Bejing, China.

In México, Karam directs the Casa del Tibet and multiple programs and offerings. He has also lectured worldwide and travels extensively. He is the author of numerous publications on Tibet and Buddhism, and is a fellow of Worcester College of Oxford, England and a member of its XXI Century Trust. He is one of two Mexican nationals selected to host and present the upcoming visit of the Dali Lama of Tibet to Mexico next year.
