Latin American Author Cortázar Celebrated at TAMIU April 20

Texas A&M International University's student organization Club de Español Siglo XXI will present "Homenaje a Julio Cortázar" at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20 in Bob Bullock Hall, room 101. This acted reading, honoring the Argentinean novelist and poet, was created from excerpts of his short stories, novels and incorporates the music of Cortázar's time.

Dr. Jose Cardona-Lopéz, faculty advisor of the group and associate professor of Spanish, said this acted reading will be free of charge and open to the public. He said members of the club will perform in honor of the 20th anniversary of Cortázar's death, and the 90th anniversary of his birth.

"He is considered a master of the fantastic, and an inspiration to Spanish language authors," said Cardona-Lopéz.

Cortázar's most acclaimed novel is Rayuela (Hopscotch), written in 1963, in which the reader, following instructions within the text, reads the chapters out of order, moving from place to place within the book, explained Cardona-Lopéz.

"Cortázar is well known for his novels and short stories. He was also a poet and a translator, particularly noted for his work on Edgar Allan Poe's writings," he said.
