Educator preparation programs at Texas A&M International University have been accredited by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).

TAMIU's accreditation is based on student scores on ExCET exams over two academic years, 2001-2003. According to SBEC, the cumulative pass rate for students in educator preparation programs at TAMIU was 92%. The previous pass rate in 2001 was 83%.

University president Dr. Ray Keck said the accreditation stands as a testament to hard work by faculty and students.

"This is a strong indication of faculty commitment to student success and students simply doing their best. It speaks highly of these students' readiness to enter this noble profession and signals that they are able to provide dynamic and qualified instruction," Dr. Keck said.

Dr. Humberto Gonzalez, dean of the College of Education, concurred and said he is glad to see the programs' excellence and the students' efforts being recognized.

"This is a significant accomplishment, and one that both faculty and students share. Both are committed to these programs and that commitment shows," Dr. Gonzalez said.

He noted that despite sweeping statewide changes in teacher preparation, Laredo's hometown University continues to prepare the majority of Laredo and regional teachers through its traditional baccalaureate, alternative certification, endorsement and masters programs.

"There are a lot of changes underway across the State, most predicated on addressing projected shortages through legislated options; but we remain convinced that a traditional preparation, linked to the needs of the districts and in keeping with SBEC standards, produces the most qualified classroom teacher for our districts," Gonzalez said.
