New D.D. Hachar Honors Scholars, President's Scholars Named at TAMIU

New members of the 2004 Texas A&M International University class of D. D. Hachar Honors Program Scholars and Presidents Scholars were introduced in evening ceremonies held May 10 at the University's Western Hemispheric Trade Center.

35 students were selected for the D. D. Hachar Honors Program, the city's only four-year honors program. Nine students were named Presidents Scholars.

Students who are selected for the D.D. Hachar Honors Scholarship Program must be current residents of Webb, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Duval, McMullen, La Salle, Dimmit or Maverick counties, have an SAT Score of 1100 or 24 ACT and an average high school grade of 95 or be in the top 5 percent of their graduating class.

The D. D. Hachar Honors Scholarship provides for student tuition, books and fees for all four years of the student's undergraduate program. The four-year scholarship is for $16,000 or $2,000 per semester.

The Program honors the late Laredo businessman D. D. Hachar, a well-known philanthropist of uncommon generosity. His legacy lives on at TAMIU through the D. D. Hachar Charitable Trust, which funds the D. D. Hachar Honors Program and is managed by the Laredo National Bank. To date, the Trust has provided over $785,000 in scholarship support for students enrolled in the TAMIU program. A highlight of the May 10 program was a special recognition of the LNB Charitable Trust.

2004 D. D. Hachar Honors Scholars include Rosie Aguilar, Jissel Anaya, Juan Arellano Jr., Cheryl Arnold, Codie Bergoon, Nelda E. Chapa, Brenda Charles, Rodrigo Corral, Jessica Davila, Gabriela Diaz, Francisco A. Garcia, Lillian Garcia, Blanca Garcia, Alberto Garza III, Monica Gonzalez, Valeria Haugen, Rosa A. Hernandez and Priscilla Hinojosa.

Also, Claudia Ibañez, Karla Liñero, Annette Maldonado, Irma Martinez, Tania Martinez, Erica Matos, Rosa McCabe, Veronica Montes, Valeria Montes, Brenda Peña, Christine Prevost, Erica Ramirez, Jorge Serrato, Melissa Tapia, Cynthia Velasco, Victor Villarreal and Arianne Zecca.

President's Scholars must meet the same academic criteria as D. D. Hachar Scholars.

2004 Presidents Scholars include Leslie Carreon, Kimberly Compean, Monica Gonzalez, Vanessa Gonzalez, Melissa Martin, Christy Martinez, Valeria Montes, Mary E. Trevino and Brittany Witt.
