Summer Camps of All Kinds for Kids, Teens at TAMIU

Summer is almost here, and Texas A&M International University is making sure that Laredo children will have plenty to stretch their minds and bodies.

TAMIU's Office of Special Programs Summer Camps will be offered for children from pre-kindergarten through eleventh grade. All camps will be held at the TAMIU campus from Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, June 7 and ending Friday, July 9. The cost is $375 per student, unless otherwise noted.

Kinder Camp, for children three through five years old, will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Students will learn subjects such as "What do I get? (Math)" and "Scribble, Scribble! (Writing)."

Academic Camp, for students aged kinder through sixth grade, will meet from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Subject areas include crafts, computers, book publishing, fun physics, art and science.

Children in grades first through sixth can participate in the TAMIU Children's Summer Workshop, which will offer such topics as "Hello, World! (Language, culture)," "Do, Re, Mi (Sing, Play, Move)," "Computer Education," and "Explore (Reading)."

The Summer Academy is for students in seventh through eleventh grade. Academic courses, including art, sculpture, science and computers, will be taught from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Math and English PSAT and SAT courses will be offered from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost for this program is $250 per student.

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts artistic camps will offer children ways to express their artistic talents.

The arts camps run Monday through Thursday from 2 to 5:30 p.m. beginning Monday, June 7 through Thursday, July 8 on the TAMIU campus.

Guitar, piano, voice and music discovery will be available for children ages kindergarten, first through third and fourth to sixth grades. In addition, drama theaterwill be offered for first to third and fourth to sixth grades, Soto explained. The camp will consist of three blocks, each one hour long, with two 15-minute break/snack periods. The cost is $125 per block.

The fifth annual Rogelio Rodriguez Flamenco Workshop will be offered at TAMIU on Saturday, June 12 and Sunday, June 13.

Rogelio Rodriguez is a native Laredoan and has operated the Rodriguez Academy of Dance and his own professional company in Houston for more than 30 years. He was lead dancer for Charo and has performed with Jerry Lewis, Joey Bishop, Dom DeLouise and Jim Nabors in Las Vegas.

The workshop will cover technique from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and repertoire from 1:30 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 12. The workshop will continue Sunday at 10 a.m., again working on repertoire.

The workshop is free and open to dancers at least 15 years old through the support of the TAMIU Department of Fine and Performing Arts Dance Program, the City of Laredo, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

Texas A&M International University's  Eduardo M. Hinojosa Reading Research Center will host literacy camps this summer.

The  camps will help children increase their reading and writing abilities,  and are limited to second through fifth grade students. Fees are $25 for the three-week  program which begins July 12 and ends July 29.

TAMIU's Athletics Department Camps, for children ages five and older, will offer activities for the body.

Boys basketball camps will begin Monday, May 31 and run Monday through Friday until Friday, June 4. Boys aged five through eight will meet from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and those nine through 12 will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. Those aged 12 and up will have camp from Monday, June 7 through Friday, June 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost for each camper is $100. Girls basketball camp will be open to sixth through twelfth graders beginning Monday, June 14 through Friday, June 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $60 per person and those interested should contact coach Marc García at 326.2904.

Boys and girls soccer camp for advanced players aged eight through 13 will begin Monday, June 7 through Friday, June 11 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Beginner players aged six and up will have camp from Monday, June 14 through Friday, June 18, also from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $100. Volleyball camp for youths will begin Monday, July 12 through Friday, July 16 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Older players will have camp the same dates from 1 to 5 p.m. Cost is $68 per player. For more information contact Coach Binny Canales at 326.2894.
