Writers create the world on a page, and now students at Texas A&M International University can explore this process, thanks to a new minor in creative writing.

Dr. Kathleen Pletsch de García, associate professor and chair of the Department of Language and Literature, said the minor was an exciting addition, allowing students more opportunities to explore their creativity.

"The minor is offered in English and in Spanish, allowing students to express themselves in ways that reflect the bicultural nature of Laredo," Pletsch de García said.

This unusual choice is fairly rare at U.S. universities, she explained.

"While students can often major in another language, it is not often they can focus on Spanish in their writing as part of a minor. We hope many students will take advantage of this offering," she said.

The minor requires 18 semester credit hours, at least 12 of which must be advanced. Students can choose from such courses as "Studies in World Literature," "Chicano/a Literature," "The Spanish American Novel" and "Studies in Mexican Literature."

For more information, please contact Dr. Pletsch de García at 326.2614, visit offices in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library, room 428 or e-mail kdegarcia@tamiu.edu.

University office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
