A special "Sneak Peek" at new residential student housing at Texas A&M International University will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 10 from 5- 8 p.m. at the east end of University Boulevard.

The new 424-bed Residential Learning Community opens for occupation Aug. 21 with an impressive facility that includes dedicated undergraduate coed and same-sex housing, themed floors, computer lab, high-speed internet and free cable TV, fitness center, laundry facilities, gated security, swimming pool, and lit basketball courts and volleyball courts.

"It's a remarkable new complex that demonstrates the latest in student residence thinking and management," said Dr. Tom Corti, vice president for Student Affairs at TAMIU.

"Quite simply, to use an antiquated reference, it's not your father's dorm. This is a complete complex that focuses on student success and provides an environment conducive to learning and incorporating the entire University experience," Dr. Corti said.

He noted the new housing will provide the University with a much-needed ability to address housing needs generated by dramatic enrollment growth.

"We've been posting average growths of 10% per semester for some time. That growth includes both out of town and local students, both groups that benefit from living on campus," he said.

Of special interest is the use of themed floors which group students who have common academic interests or majors with others who share their interests. We created themed floors to help students get the most out of the residential life experience. The 24-hour Quiet Floor is for students who are serious about academics and want to live with others who feel the same. There will be fun times, but the focus is on studying," explained Corti, "The Health Professions Floor will put those planning a future in the medical profession in close proximity. Anyone interested in the arts will enjoy the Performing Arts Floor, which should resonate with music, art and theater. A Wellness/Substance Free Floor will group students who want a healthy lifestyle."

He indicated research shows that students who live on campus have better academic success and tend to complete their program of study on time and, sometimes, even faster.

The Sneak Peek will offer special conducted tours and students will also have an opportunity to sign up for housing and consider their unit.

Refreshments will be served.

This is the second TAMIU student housing complex. The first, University Village, opened in 1997. It is a 220-bed facility that has been operating at full capacity for some time.
