Fall Convocation Honors TAMIU Faculty, Students

Last week's annual Fall Convocation at Texas A&M International University signaled and celebrated the start of the academic year for the University's faculty, students and staff.

Highlight of the event was the awarding of various honors including the Scholar of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Distance Educator of the Year and faculty and student recipients of the Zaffirini Medal for Leadership and Scholarship.

Named Scholar of the Year was Dr. Hamid R. Kusha, associate professor of criminal justice, College of Arts and Sciences, a member of the faculty since 1998 and prolific researcher in comparative criminal justice systems, sociology of law, international terrorism and penology.

Honored as Teacher of the Year was Dr. Sushma Krishnamurthy, associate professor of biology, College of Arts and Sciences, a faculty member since 1995 who is sponsor of the University's Biology Club and conducts research into water quality and heavy metal pollution.

Distance Educator of the Year, a new award being presented for the first time, was provided to Dr. Lem Londos Railsback. Dr. Railsback has been a member of the faculty since 1972, and has emerged as a faculty leader in distance education delivery.

The Zaffirini Medals, which honor State Senator Dr. Judith Zaffirini, are provided to a student and a member of the University faculty in recognition of leadership and scholarship.

The student recipient was Felix Velazquez, vice president of the University's Student Government Association. Velasquez also provided remarks as part of the morning program.

The faculty recipient was Dr. Ronald Anderson, associate professor, College of Education. Dr. Anderson joined the faculty in 1997 and has been recognized for his leadership in teacher education programs at TAMIU. His research has focused on the Asheninca tribe of Peru, their language and culture.

The ceremony was followed with a pep rally and luncheon in the Student Center Ballroom.
