Congressman Turner to Hold Public Hearing on Security, Border Issues at TAMIU

Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on Homeland Security, U.S. Congressman Jim Turner (D-Crockett), will be in Laredo on Monday, Sept. 13 to host a Public Hearing on Homeland Security and Border Issues at Texas A&M International University's Western Hemispheric Trade Center room 116 at 1:30 p.m.

Congressman Turner is serving his fourth term in Congress representing the Second Congressional District of Texas. In addition to his service to the House Select Committee, he is a member of the Armed Services Committee, and has served as the ranking member of the Terrorism Subcommittee.

Turner is co-chair of the "Blue Dog" Coalition, a group of moderate and conservative Democrats who work for fiscal responsibility through balanced budgets and lower taxes. His work in Congress focuses on promoting economic development and forestry in East Texas and he continues his focus on senior citizens through his sponsorship of legislation to lower prescription drug costs.

Turner was sworn in as a Member of Congress in January 1997, and previously served 10 years in the Texas Senate and the Texas House. He also served as executive assistant to former Governor Mark White.

In the Texas Senate, he was recognized by a number of statewide organizations for leadership in health care, criminal justice, education and on behalf of Texas children.

Turner earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in business and his law degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He served in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Captain.

In his hometown of Crockett, he served as Mayor and president of the Chamber of Commerce and has been a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church.

Turner and his wife, Ginny, have been married for 34 years and have two adult children, John and Susan, both Texas attorneys.

A luncheon at TAMIU for invited guests of the Congressman will precede the Public Hearing.
